Collecting Bikes for Africa

Rotary Club of Canterbury Sunrise were pleased to be part of the celebrations for Jole Rider sending it’s 10,000 refurbished bicycle to the Gambia under it’s Bikes4Africa campaign.  These bikes are refurbished at the Immigration Detention Centre at Dover and the project, which has been going for six years, benefits people all round.  Firstly the bikes are distributed to school children based on their needs and this has improved their school performance dramatically as it converts a three hour walk to school to a manageable one hour ride.  Secondly it allows people to donate their unused bikes to a good cause rather than letting them sit around gathering rust and thirdly it gives the maintenance team at the centre in Dover a chance to learn and practice a new skill.

Club Rotarians John Sarah at our bike collection point in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral Our Rotary Club have collected hundreds of bikes for this scheme and we were instrumental in getting the bikes at the Canterbury tip put to one side for collection for this project rather than being crushed for scrap metal.

If you have any bikes in a reasonable condition which you would like to donate for this cause please contact the club Secretary.
